Guidance for award holders

Find out how our service changes affect you

Healthy Working Lives (HWL) is no longer delivering an award programme, instead we support organisations to focus on actions that will make the biggest difference to workforce health and wellbeing.

Healthy Working Lives sevices

Healthy Working Lives provides a useful framework for organisations to follow on their journey towards Fair Work by improving staff health, safety and wellbeing and support is available through your local health board.

Please contact your health board directly for additional support and see our services page for more details.

Value of your award and moving forward

Holding a Healthy Working Lives award has demonstrated that you have the experience and expertise to create a healthy workplace and we encourage you to continue taking forward what your staff tell you matters to them.

We encourage you to develop and take forward Fair Work (external site) practices across your workplace with support as needed from your local Health Board adviser.

As an organisation, you may wish to start this Fair Work journey by completing the free Fair Work assessment tool (external site).

When your award will expire

We encourage you to not display the HWL award logo after 31 March 2023.

Documentation, for example letterheads with the award logo on it, should be gradually transitioned out of use.

You can use up existing stationery and literature with the award logo, but any new documentation, adverts or paperwork should not include the award logo on it.

HWL working groups

It’s a good idea to continue with any established good practice you have put in place from achieving the award. That might include a working group.

However, if you feel different approach would benefit your organisation then you can change as needed.

As part of your health improvement support to your organisation you may wish to utilise the useful framework, workplace tools, templates and guidance on the HWL website and local support and resources from your health board.

Organisations can continue to use national resources to evolve their work in this area.

Staff health

Each organisation can choose how best to address staff health.

Taking forward Fair Work and good employee health and wellbeing should have as its foundation, compliance with Health and Safety Law, Employment Law and The Equality Act.

There cannot be good employee health without these foundations being in place.

Mentoring and volunteering at other organisations

We would encourage you to continue to mentor other organisations and share your experience, expertise, and examples of good practice.

As part of your organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility, we encourage you to continue to volunteer and support local health campaigns and charities.

Registered workplaces e-portfolio

The e-portfolio will be available to registered workplaces until the end of September 2022.

We would ask you to download personal information by the end of September.

Employee Wellbeing Survey (EWS)

It is always a good idea to periodically survey your staff views and experiences.

This can be done using a variety of methods and your organisation has the flexibility to use your preferred survey methods. Our surveys will continue to be available on our website.

Advisers and local teams

You will still have access to your local Health Board team. Links to contact all local teams across Scotland are available on the HWL website.

Training

Many local Health Board teams are providing face to face and online training options, bookable on the HWL website

Online training is also available on the Public Health Scotland Virtual Learning Environment. Visit the Virtual Learning Environment.
